A fortune teller of the lower class who was active among the general public in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. They are also called Urayasan, Uraoki, Mitooshi, etc. They were fortune tellers of the same type as Shomoji and Hakase, disguised as priests or mountain ascetics, and went out on the streets chanting "Urayasan" to gain customers, and performed fortune telling based on Onmyodo using counting sticks. In "Thirty-two Artisans' Poetry Contest," in which they are confronted with a komuso (a Buddhist monk), they write, "The flowers that grow together with the calculation sticks are five-shaped, unable to withstand the wind," and "What a bitter world for the calculation staff who live in a temporary hut the size of a palanquin," and in the Noh and Kyogen play "Igui," a scene in which a sanoki is telling fortunes is described.
