Sameura Dam

Japanese: 早明浦ダム - さめうらだむ

Located in the upper reaches of the Yoshino River, this is the largest dam in Shikoku. It is 106 meters high, 400 meters long, has an effective storage capacity of 289 million cubic meters, and a flooded area of 750 hectares. It is a multipurpose dam with functions including flood control, water supply, and power generation, and construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1975. The artificial lake created by the dam is called "Sameura Lake." It was selected as one of the "Top 100 Dam Lakes" in 2005, and is also used as a tourist resource, with two marathons held there every year. Water shortages have been frequent, including major droughts in 1994, 2005, and 2008, and are often a topic of national discussion.

吉野川本流上流部に位置する四国最大のダム。高さ106メートル、長さ400メートル、有効貯水容量2億8900万立方メートル、湛水面積750ヘクタール。治水・上水道・発電などの役割をもつ多目的ダムで、1963年に着工し75年に完成した。ダムによる人造湖の名称は「さめうら湖」。2005年「ダム湖百選」に選ばれ、毎年2回のマラソン大会が行われるなど観光資源としても活用されている。94年、2005年、08年の大渇水を始め水不足が頻発しており、全国的に話題となることが多い。
