Bolesław Chrobry (English spelling)

(We should imagine a complex intertwining of neighboring countries.) Bolesław the Brave (c. 966-1025), who succeeded Mieszko I, asked the Bishop of Prague, Adalbert Wojciech, to preach in Prussia, where pagans lived, in order to expand his domain. After Adalbert's martyrdom, the Pope reported the fact to Rome and obtained permission to establish the Archbishopric of Gniezno (meaning independence from the Archbishopric of Magdeburg), the Bishopric of Krakow (responsible for the missionary work in the Lesser Poland region), the Bishopric of Wrocław (responsible for the missionary work in the Silesian region), and the Bishopric of Kołobrzeg (responsible for the missionary work in the Pomeranian region). In the year 1000 (believed to be the year of the Last Judgment), Holy Roman Emperor Otto III visited the tomb of Saint Wojciech, who was buried in Gniezno, and crowned Bolesław the Brave as an archbishopric (the papal approval was not given until 1025).
