A tributary of the right bank of the Danube that flows through Bavaria in southern Germany. It originates in the Karwendel Mountains in North Tyrol in Austria and crosses the Bavarian Alps into Germany. It flows roughly north through the moraine region of the Alps, followed by the gravelly alluvial fan region created by glaciers, before passing through the city of Munich. It then turns northeast and joins the Danube a little downstream of Deggendorf. Its total length is 283 km. Hydroelectric power generation is actively carried out in the mountainous areas upstream.
