A war fought in July 1969 between the Central American nations of El Salvador and Honduras. It is also known as the 100-hour war. In 1969, when Honduras implemented land reform, it expelled border-crossing farmers from El Salvador, and news spread that they were being mistreated. The outbreak of hostilities began when a World Cup soccer match between the two countries was held in San Salvador, and on July 14, El Salvador invaded Honduras, and the fighting continued for 100 hours. A peace treaty was signed in 1980, but the pending border issue remained unresolved. As refugees from the civil war in El Salvador continued to flow into Honduras, tensions between the two countries continued throughout the 1980s.
