Nicholas Ridley

Around 1500-55
Anglican clergyman and Bishop of London. He studied at Cambridge, the Sorbonne, and Louvain, and in 1540 was rector of Pembroke Hall in Cambridge. He was elected Bishop of Rochester in 1547, and transferred to Bishop of London in 1550. After Edward VI ascended to the throne, he assisted Cranmer in promoting the Reformation, and participated in the creation of the Prayer Book and the Forty-Two Confessions. After Mary ascended to the throne (1553), he was stripped of his office, declared a heretic, and burned at the stake in Oxford. [YASHIRO Takashi]

英国国教会の聖職者，ロンドン主教。ケンブリッジ，ソルボンヌ，ルーバンで学び，1540年ケンブリッジのペンブローク･ホールの学長。47年ロチェスター主教に選ばれ，50年ロンドン主教に転任。エドワード6世登位後クランマーを助けて宗教改革を推進し，祈禱書，《四十二ヵ条の信仰告白》の作成に加わった。メアリー登位(1553)後，職務を剝奪され，異端宣告を受け，オックスフォードで火刑に処せられた。【八代崇】
