Also called Nui, Nuetsugumi, Nuedori, Onitsugumi, Choman, etc., it has been considered an ominous and spooky bird since ancient times because it cries gloomily at night from around the time the snow melts to around May or June. In the first volume of the Manyoshu, it is sung, “…the unlucky thing is in pain, the young bird is crying out in vain…” and in the Tsutsumi Chunagon Monogatari, it is written, “I wonder if the song of the Nue is a cursed thing.” …
