Yoshizo Sakanishi

Year of birth: December 4, 1877
Economist of the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods. Born in Kinosaki, Hyogo Prefecture. After graduating from Kyoto Commercial School, Tokyo Municipal Commercial and Technical Middle School, and Tokyo Higher Commercial School (Hitotsubashi University), he graduated from the department in 1904. In the same year, he became a lecturer at Kobe Higher Commercial School (Kobe University), and was promoted to professor in 1904. He received his doctorate in economics. He is known as the pinnacle of Fukuda Tokuzo's studies, having written many books and papers on business theory and economic history. While studying in Germany, he studied under Brentano and lectured on the principles of economics and economic history. Unfortunately, he lost his right eye in 1921, and in 1923 he also lost his sight in his left eye, and retired the following year. However, he continued to teach as a lecturer until around 1937, and also instructed seminar students, and his renowned lectures deeply impressed many students.

明治大正昭和期の経済学者。兵庫県城崎町に生まれる。京都商業,東京の市立商工中学および東京高等商業学校(一橋大学)を経て,明治37(1904)年同専攻部を卒業。同年神戸高等商業学校(神戸大学)講師となり,39年教授に昇任。経済学博士。企業論および経済史に関する著書・論文が多く,福田徳三門下の白眉と称され,ドイツ留学中はブレンターノに師事し,経済原論と経済史の講義を担当した。不幸にして大正10(1921)年右眼を病み,13年には左眼も失明,翌14年には退職したが,その後も講師として昭和12(1937)年ごろまで教壇に立ちゼミ学生の指導も行い,その名講義は多くの学生に深い感銘を与えた。
