A former town in Ena County, eastern Gifu Prefecture. The main settlement is in the lowlands near the confluence of the Kiso River and Kawakami River. Rice, tea, chestnuts, tomatoes, etc. are produced here. Woodworking is thriving, and handmade Japanese paper is also a specialty. In February 2005, it was incorporated into Nakatsugawa City, along with Tsukechi Town, Fukuoka Town, Hirukawa Village, Kawakami Village, and Kashimo Village in Ena County, and Yamaguchi Village in Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture. 29.77 km2 . 5,574 people (2003).
