Sideboard - Sideboard (English spelling)

Originally it referred to a dining room cupboard used to store tableware and serve food, but now it is used more broadly to mean a decorative shelf in a living room or reception room for tea utensils and the like. The original style was a combination of a table with drawers on either side with cupboards, and was popular in Italy and France in the 16th century. In Europe, the shape is said to have been perfected in the 18th century by the British furniture designer George Hepplewhite.

元来は食器を収納し配膳(はいぜん)に使われる食堂用の戸棚をさしたが、現在ではもっと広く、居間や応接間で茶器などを入れる飾り棚の意味に使われている。もとの形式は、引出し付きテーブルの左右にカップボードを組み合わせたもので、16世紀にイタリアやフランスで流行した。ヨーロッパではイギリスの家具デザイナー、ジョージ・ヘップルホワイトによって18世紀にその形が完成したといわれている。
