Adipose tissue

A type of connective tissue found throughout the body, but especially developed in subcutaneous tissue. Fat cells, the main component, are spherical cells that contain large masses of fat, with the nucleus and protoplasm pushed to one side. Adipose tissue not only acts to softly wrap around various organs, but also stores nutrients and serves as an important source of energy when food supplies are cut off. It is also a poor conductor of heat, so it also functions to conserve body heat. It also has the effect of preventing damage to bones and other parts of the body from external forces.

結合組織の一種で全身にみられるが，特に皮下組織で発達している。主成分である脂肪細胞は，その内部に大きな脂肪塊を含み，核と原形質は片隅に押しやられている球形の細胞である。脂肪組織は諸器官をやわらかく包む役割を果しているほか，栄養を貯蔵し，食料補給がとだえたときなど重要なエネルギー供給源となる。また熱の不良導体であるため，体熱保存の機能も果している。外力に対して骨などの損傷を防ぐ効果もある。
