Japanese: 吟味詰り之口書 - ぎんみつまりのくちがき

...When the statement was ready, the magistrate would appear in court, gather all the people involved in the case, and have the official read the statement aloud (kuchigakiyomikike), have it stamped, or have the person confirm the statement that had already been stamped (kuchigakikuchiawase). The statement that had gone through this procedure was called a "ginmitsumari no kuchigaki," and this was how the punishment was decided. Torture was permitted to obtain a confession, and was carried out in prison under certain legal restrictions....

…When the confession was finally compiled into a written record, all the people involved were gathered in the courtroom, and in the presence of the magistrate, an official read it out loud and asked the person to stamp it with his seal or finger print. This was called reading and listening to the written record, and the resulting record was called the "investigative record." With this, the facts of the crime were established, the oral hearing was over, and thereafter the punishment was decided in a written hearing based on this record. …
