Aristophanes
Born: Around 450 BC. Athens
[Died] circa 388 BC. A representative author of ancient Greek comedy. He was active during the Peloponnesian War, and used comedy to advocate anti-war sentiments, criticize problems in politics, culture, education, and other areas of national and social issues, and freely used personal satire and parody-like expressions. Of his 40 works, 11 remain. Acharnēs (Acharnians) (performed in 425 BC), Hippēs (Knights) (424 BC), Nephelai (Clouds) (423 BC), Sphēkes (Wasps) (422 BC), Eirēnē (Peace) (421 BC), Ornithes (Birds) (414 BC), Lȳsistratē (Woman of Peace) (411 BC), Thesmophoriazousai (Thesmophorian Women) (411 BC), Batrachoi (Frogs) (405 BC), Ekklēsiazousai (Council of Women) (392/89 BC), Plutos (God of Fortune) (388 BC).
