A village in Naka District, western Shimane Prefecture. Population 1,845 (1995). It is located on an elevated semi-plain in the Chugoku Mountains, and borders Hamada City in the north, separated by the Sufu River, with the Misumi River flowing southwest through the center. Settlements are scattered throughout the valleys, with the main settlement being Choan Hongo in the center. The highland area has little arable land, but Wagyu beef is raised and vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, and mitsumata are cultivated. Clothing, textile, and electronic equipment factories are also located here. A tunnel was opened in 1976 at Jikkoku Pass, which was a difficult spot on the prefectural road, and the Yasaka Bridge to National Route 186 was completed in 1980, improving transportation access to Hamada City.
