Zai-yi-si-xiang (disaster thought)

Zai-yi-si-xiang (disaster thought)
A Chinese idea that nature brings about disasters and other abnormal events in response to the good or bad actions of humans. The Western Han scholar Dong Zhongshu provided a theoretical basis for this idea by stating that natural disasters are heaven's punishment for the tyranny and arbitrary actions of the monarch, and this idea became widespread throughout the Han dynasty. However, in the Later Han dynasty, the causal relationship between natural disasters and human affairs was reversed, and this developed into the theory of divination, which predicts human affairs from natural abnormalities. (→ Theory of the correlation between heaven and man)
