882‐942 A Babylonian Jewish leader and the foremost scholar and writer of his time. He was born in the Faiyum region of Egypt and was also known as the Fayumi. As an adult, he moved to the East, and was later chosen as head of the Academy in Surat because of his profound learning. He wrote many books, but his most famous is the Book of Faith and Opinion, written in Arabic. This theologian, who had strong Mu'tazila tendencies, is highly regarded as the first thinker of the Middle Ages who sought to reconcile the Bible and philosophy.
