A Babylonian Jewish leader and the foremost scholar and writer of his time. He was born in the Faiyum region of Egypt and was also known as the Fayumi. As an adult, he moved to the East, and was later chosen as head of the Academy in Surat because of his profound learning. He wrote many books, but his most famous is the Book of Faith and Opinion, written in Arabic. This theologian, who had strong Mu'tazila tendencies, is highly regarded as the first thinker of the Middle Ages who sought to reconcile the Bible and philosophy. He also produced important works as a Hebrew grammarian.

バビロニアのユダヤ教徒の指導者で,当代随一の学者,著述家。エジプトのファイユーム出身でファイユーミーともよばれた。成人して東方世界に移り,のちにその深い学識のゆえにスーラのアカデミーの長に選ばれる。著書は数多いが,とりわけアラビア語で書かれた《信仰と臆見の書》は有名である。ムータジラ派的傾向の強いこの神学者は,聖書と哲学の和解を模索した中世で最初の思想家として高い評価をうけている。ヘブライ語文法学者としても重要な著作を残している。
