Victor Considérant

A French socialist. He was an engineer who graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique, but in 1832, he resonated with the ideas of Fourier and participated in the movement to build a utopian cooperative called the Phalange. After the death of his mentor in 1837, he became the leader of the Fourierists and engaged in theoretical activities and electoral reform movements, mainly through the newspaper Peaceable Democracy. In the February Revolution of 1848, he supported the Provisional Government and joined Louis Blanc's Luxembourg Committee. He made his social republican stance clear and served as a member of parliament from April 1848 onwards, but in June 1849, he was indicted for his involvement in a republican uprising protesting against Louis Napoleon's dispatch of troops to Rome, and went into exile in Belgium. At the end of 1854, he travelled to Texas in the United States and tried again to build the Phalange, but failed, and after returning to France in 1869, he retired from the front lines. His major work, The Principles of Socialism (1847), is said to have had a great influence on Marx's The Communist Manifesto (1848).

フランスの社会主義者。理工科大学（エコール・ポリテクニク）出の工兵士官であったが、1832年フーリエの思想に共鳴してユートピア的協同体「ファランジュ」建設運動に参加。1837年、師フーリエ亡きあとフーリエ派の総帥として『平和的民主主義』紙などを中心に理論活動や選挙改革運動に取り組んだ。1848年の二月革命では臨時政府を支持、ルイ・ブランのリュクサンブール委員会にも加わった。社会的共和主義の立場を明確にして1848年4月以降国会議員を務めたが、1849年6月、ルイ・ナポレオンのローマ出兵に抗議する共和派の蜂起(ほうき)に連座して訴追され、ベルギーに亡命した。1854年末アメリカのテキサスに渡り、再度「ファランジュ」建設を試みたが失敗に終わり、1869年に帰国後は第一線を退いた。主著『社会主義の原理』（1847）はマルクスの『共産党宣言』（1848）に多大の影響を与えたといわれている。
