An alluvial plain that unfolds in the lower reaches of the Ota River in western Hiroshima Prefecture. The Ota River joins the Misasa River in Kabe, in the north of Hiroshima City, and this narrow area stretches from the confluence to Hiroshima Bay, measuring 20 kilometers north to south and 5 kilometers wide at its widest point. The northern part is a floodplain, while the lower reaches are divided into six parts by the Ota River, forming a delta called the Hiroshima Delta. The central city area of Hiroshima is located here, but the area south of the Peace Memorial Park was reclaimed during the Hiroshima Domain era, and was filled in after World War II. Hijiyama and Ebayama are former islands that have been closed off. Asakita Ward and Minami Ward, which occupy the northern floodplain, were once suburban farming villages where vegetables were grown, but have become increasingly urbanized and turned into residential and industrial areas.
