The phenomenon in which people flock to areas where gold mines have been discovered in order to obtain gold. The California Gold Rush was particularly large, and it is said that after gold was discovered in 1848, about 100,000 people flocked to the area in 1849 alone. Other examples include Victoria in Australia in 1851, Colorado in the United States in 1859, the Transvaal in South Africa in 1884, and the Klondike in Alaska in 1896.
