The capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar. Located in the center of the Kachin Plateau. It is located on the west bank of the uppermost part of the Ayeyarwady River and borders Yunnan Province, China, 50 km east. It is the terminal station of the Mandalay-Myitkyina railway line and the northernmost railway station in Myanmar. It is also a stopover point on the trade route from Yunnan to Assam in India, and has prospered as a trading center since ancient times. During the British colonial period, the Kachin State colonial government was located here, and many British-style buildings remain. It was a fierce battlefield during World War II. It is still a strategic military location in northern Myanmar. It distributes timber and cotton from the Kmon Mountains in the northwest. The inhabitants are Burmese, Kachin, Yunnanese, Chinese, Nagas, and Shans. Population 18,801 (1983).

ミャンマー北部，カチン州の州都。カチン高原中央部に位置する。エイヤーワディ川本流の最上流地点の西岸にあって，東方 50kmで中国のユンナン (雲南) 省と接する。マンダレー－ミッチーナー線の終着駅でミャンマー最北部の鉄道駅。ユンナンからインドのアッサムにいたる交易経路の中継地点にもあたり，古くから交易中心地として繁栄。イギリス植民地時代は，カチン州植民地行政府がおかれ，イギリス風の建物が多く残された。第2次世界大戦では激戦場となった。現在でも，北部ミャンマーの軍事要衝地である。北西のクモン山脈からの木材，綿花などを集散する。住民はビルマ人，カチン族のほかユンナン人，中国人，ナーガ族，シャン族が居住する。人口1万 8801 (1983) 。
