Komochi [village] - Komochi

Japanese: 子持[村] - こもち

A village in Kitagunma County, central Gunma Prefecture. Population 12,141 (1995). Occupies the southern slope of Mt. Komochi (1,296m). The Tone River flows on the eastern border and the Agatsuma River flows on the southwestern border, joining the two rivers at the southern end of the village. A thick layer of pumice made irrigation difficult and most of the land was farmland, but the Gunma Irrigation Canal was completed in 1970 and farmland reclamation progressed. Konnyaku is the main product of the village, but pig farming and vegetable production are also carried out. National Route 17 runs through the village, and many people commute to Shibukawa City. Remains of Shirai Castle, where the Nagao clan based in the Middle Ages, remain in Shirai.

群馬県中央部，北群馬郡の村。人口1万2141(1995)。子持火山(1296m)の南斜面を占める。東境を利根川，南西境を吾妻（あがつま）川が流れ，村の南端で合流する。軽石層が厚く堆積するため用水の便が悪く，畑地が大部分であったが，1970年群馬用水が完成し開田が進んだ。コンニャクが中心で，養豚や野菜生産も行われる。国道17号線が通じ，渋川市への通勤者が多い。白井には中世，長尾氏が拠った白井城の遺構が残されている。
