A marine animal belonging to the order Mysidae and class Crustacea of the phylum Arthropoda. It is distributed along the Pacific coast of Japan. It is about 7.5 mm long and has large, round eyes. It is distinguished from similar genera by the blunt, pointed front edge of the cephalothorax and the unique shape of the telson segment, the anterior half of which is an inverted triangle and the posterior half is disc-shaped. There are about six pairs of spines along the lateral edge of the anterior half of the telson segment, and about 30 spines along the periphery of the posterior half. The external appendages of the fourth abdominal appendage of the male are significantly longer, with the first segment being about three times the length of the second or third segment, and the end of the third segment having two short setae. It is important as fishing bait. [Masamichi Takeda] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
