It is a type of puppet theater, Kabuki, and Kyogen. It includes the Five Men of Karigane, the Five Men of Kumokiri, and the Five Men of Shiranami. The story of five real-life ruffians (who were executed in August 1702), led by Gankin Bunshichi, Anno Heibei, Hotei Ichiemon, Gokuin Senemon, and Kaminari Shokuro, was made into a puppet play at the Okamoto Bunya-za theater the month after their execution in "Gankin Bunshichi: Autumn Frost." Since then, the stories have been passed down as "The First Year of Gankin Bunshichi's Memorial" (Yamamoto Hidajo, 1703) and "The Third Year of Gankin Bunshichi's Memorial" (Uji Kagajo, 1704). However, the story of the Five Gankin Made by a Man (Otoko Datei Tsutsukarigane) (written by Takeda Izumo, performed at the Osaka Takemoto-za theater in July 1742) emphasized the group's character as men of chivalry, which had a great influence on later generations.
