…Early modern folk songs thus had a strong social character, and were often called protest songs. In 1950, The Weavers, a group formed after World War II with Seeger at the center, recorded Good Night, Irene, written by black folk singer Leadbelly, and it became a big hit. Influenced by this group, college trios and quartets sprang up all over the country. Among them, The Kingston Trio's remake of an old folk song, Tom Dooley (1958), became a big hit, and folk songs came to completely occupy a part of popular music. …
