A turnout is a piece of equipment used to switch trains on a track to another track or to cross another track. It is generally divided into ordinary turnouts and special turnouts. Ordinary turnouts include single-leaf turnouts, double-leaf turnouts, and distribution turnouts that turn off from a straight line, as well as inner and outer turnouts that turn off from a curve. Special turnouts include over-pass turnouts, double turnouts, and diamond crossings.
