A representative court painter of the Kose school during the reign of Emperor Ichijō (986-1011) in the mid-Heian period. Dates of birth and death unknown. Also written as Hirotaka. He is considered to be the person who established the classical style in Japanese painting during the golden age of Fujiwara no Michinaga. Although no of his works remain, he painted a uta-e-satsusho (a book of poems) in 999 (Choho 1) as furnishings for Michinaga's eldest daughter, Shoshi, when she entered the Imperial Court, and in 1010 (Kanko 7) he painted a folding screen (Eiga Monogatari) as a gift for Michinaga's second daughter, Kenshi, when she entered the Imperial Court (Eiga Monogatari). He also produced the Rakufu folding screen (Daikyō) for Michitaka's residence, and shoji paintings for Sesonji Temple (1001), which were donated by Gyōnari.
