National Institute for Nature Study

National Institute for Nature Study
It is located in Shirokanedai, Minato Ward, Tokyo. It covers an area of approximately 200,000 m2. The park is rich in plateaus, spring-fed ponds, valleys, and wetlands. It is also rich in biological communities and is considered academically valuable. During the Edo period, it was the secondary residence of Matsudaira Sanukinokami, the lord of Takamatsu Domain. It became national property in 1871 (Meiji 4), but was an army powder magazine from 1875 to 1911, and in 1882 it came under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Household Ministry, where it remained as Shirokane Imperial Estate until the end of the war. The fact that no human activity was added during the approximately 70 years during which it was the powder magazine and the Imperial Household Ministry is the reason why it has been able to maintain its natural state.
