Yasutaka Kimura

A scholar of Indian philosophy and Buddhism in the Taisho and early Showa periods. Born on August 11, 1881 in Iwate Prefecture. His childhood name was Nizo. He had a hard time as a child, being sent to work as a servant in a sake shop, but he eventually went on to study at the Soto Zen University (now Komazawa University), and graduated from Tokyo Imperial University, becoming a lecturer at the same university in 1912 (Taisho 1), and a professor in 1923. His academic achievements include "History of Indian Philosophy and Religion," co-written with his mentor Takakusu Junjiro, "Six Schools of Indian Philosophy," for which he received the Imperial Academy Prize, and his doctoral thesis "A Study of the Abhidharma Theory," as well as enlightening works such as "The Path to Enlightenment." He was active as one of the pioneers of modern Buddhist studies in Japan, but passed away at the age of 50 while still employed at the University of Tokyo.

大正・昭和初期のインド哲学・仏教学者。明治14年8月11日、岩手県に生まれる。幼名は二蔵。幼時期に酒屋に奉公に出されるなど苦労したが、やがて曹洞宗(そうとうしゅう)大学（現、駒沢(こまざわ)大学）に進み、さらに東京帝国大学を卒業して、1912年（大正1）同大学講師、1923年より教授となる。著書には恩師高楠順次郎(たかくすじゅんじろう)との共著『印度(いんど)哲学宗教史』、学士院恩賜賞の『印度六派哲学』、学位取得論文である『阿毘達磨(あびだるま)論の研究』などの学術的業績のほか、『解脱(げだつ)への道』などの啓蒙(けいもう)的な著述もある。日本における近代仏教学の開拓者の一人として活躍したが、東大在職中に50歳で没した。
