Gangneung

Japanese: 江陵 - こうりょう

A city in the eastern part of Gangwon Province, Korea. It is the center of a small plain facing the Sea of Japan in the Namdaecheon River basin, and a distribution center for agricultural products. Dried oysters are a specialty. It is a key transportation hub from the Yeongdong region to Seoul, with the Yeongdong (Seoul - Gangneung, 1975) and Donghae (Gangneung - Donghae, 1979) expressways. It is the entrance to Odaesan National Park, and has developed into a tourist destination and beach destination. The local Dano Festival is also famous as a traditional performing art. 221,000 people (2005).

韓国，江原道東部の都市。南大川流域の日本海に臨む小平野の中心で農産物の集散地。干しガキを特産。嶺東地方からソウルに出る交通の要地で，嶺東（ソウル〜江陵，1975年），東海（江陵〜東海，1979年）の両高速道路がある。五台山国立公園の入口にあたり，観光地，海水浴場としても発展。また当地の端午祭は伝統芸能として有名。22万1000人（2005）。
