Carbonic anhydrase is present in red blood cells of vertebrates and catalyzes the reaction. Those of animal origin contain zinc. It is generally believed to be involved in regulating the pH of body fluids. In tissues, it catalyzes the reaction in which CO2 formed by breathing etc. is transferred to the blood, and in the lungs, it catalyzes the reaction in which H2CO3 from the blood becomes CO2 and is transferred to the air. In plants, it is also thought to be related to photosynthesis. This enzyme is also known to have the highest molecular activity of any known enzyme, converting 3.6 x 107 substrates per minute per enzyme molecule.
