Mallet-Stevens, R.

...Art Deco design can be traced back to Cubism, African-American sculpture, the Orientalism of the Ballets Russes, and the geometric forms seen in Aztec and ancient Egyptian art. In furniture, Jacques-Émile Ruhlman (1879-1933), Louis Süe, André Mare, Francis Jourdain, and André Groult, in architecture, Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886-1945), Le Corbusier, and Ozenfant, and in glass, Maurice Marinot, Lalique, and François-Émile Décorchemont, each created new designs that combined the poles of functionality and decoration. In the 1930s, design became more functionalist and streamlined, as seen in the train and ship posters of Cassandre (real name Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron, 1901-68).
