Dutch politician. Also known as De With. Born into the nobility of the city of Dordrecht. In 1653 he became legal adviser to the Parliament of Holland, and was the de facto leader of the Dutch Republic. He represented the interests of the province and the merchant class by suppressing the faction of the governor, and led two Anglo-Dutch wars.
