Founded in 1910 as a machine repair factory for Hitachi Mine, and became independent in 1920. It developed under the management of Namihei Odaira. It is one of the world's leading general electric companies, with a range of products from heavy electrical equipment, home appliances, and semiconductors to information equipment. It has many affiliated companies under its umbrella, including Hitachi Cable, Hitachi Metals, Hitachi Chemical, and Hitachi Maxell. After the collapse of the bubble economy, the company's performance stagnated, and it implemented unprecedented restructuring measures and reorganized the group. It also partnered with NEC and Mitsubishi Electric depending on the division. In 2002, it acquired the hard disk drive business from IBM. Headquarters in Tokyo, factories in Hitachi and others. In the wake of the global recession triggered by the 2008 US financial crisis, the company suffered a significant drop in sales in the fiscal year ending March 2009, posting a net loss, and posting a net loss again in 2010. 1910年日立鉱山の機械修理工場として発足，1920年独立。小平浪平の経営で発展。重電機・家庭電器・半導体などから情報機器にわたり，世界でも有数の総合電機企業。傘下(さんか)に日立電線・日立金属・日立化成工業をはじめ日立マクセルなど関連会社を多数もつ。バブル崩壊後は業績も低迷し，かつてないリストラ策を打ち出したり，グループの再編を進めた。また部門によって，NECや三菱電機とも提携。2002年米IBMからハードディスクドライブ事業を買収した。本社東京，工場日立ほか。2008年米国の金融危機に端を発する世界同時不況下で2009年３月期は大幅な売上減に見舞われ，純利益で赤字を計上，2010年も純利益で赤字を計上した。2011年３月期売上９兆3158億円，当期純益2388億円で黒字回復した。資本金4091億円（2011）。売上構成（％）は，情報通信16，電力８，社会・産業11，電子装置10，建設機械７，高機能材料13，その他35。海外売上比率43％。
