Japanese: クロイゲ - くろいげ

A semi-evergreen or deciduous, slightly creeping shrub of the Rhamnaceae family. The short branches have modified thorns, and the branches are gray and covered with short soft hairs. The leaves are opposite and have short, hairy petioles. The leaf blade is broadly ovate, 2-3 cm long, finely serrated, leathery and shiny. The flowers are small and yellow, borne in terminal or axillary spikes. They flower in autumn, and the ripened black drupes contain 2-3 seeds. They are found in many sunlit areas on the coasts of warm regions, and are distributed from Shikoku and Kyushu to the Ryukyu Islands, mainland China, and even the Himalayas.

クロウメモドキ科の半常緑あるいは落葉でややつる性の低木。短枝が変形したとげを有し，枝は灰色で短い軟毛がある。葉は対生し，短い有毛の葉柄がある。葉身は広卵形で長さ2～3cm，こまかい鋸歯があり，革質で光沢がある。花は頂生または腋生（えきせい）する穂状花序につき，小型で黄色。花期は秋，黒熟する核果は2～3個の種子を有する。温暖地の海浜の向陽地に多く，四国，九州から南西諸島，中国大陸，さらにヒマラヤにまで分布している。
