A major retail company that operates mainly discount stores. Headquartered in Michigan, USA, it has approximately 2,170 stores in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. Its predecessor was a dime store (10-cent store) founded in Detroit in 1899. It was established as S.S. Kresge Co. in 1916 and developed into a variety store. Kmart, the first discount store that opened in the suburbs of Detroit in 1962, grew and the company changed its name in 1977. In 2000, its business deteriorated, and in January 2002 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, effectively going bankrupt. It merged with Sears, Roebuck & Co. and became Sears Holdings, Inc. in March 2005.
