Trial in absentia
〘noun〙① A trial in which the defendant is absent. It is held as an exception in certain cases in criminal proceedings. *Hanamama Uguisu (1887-88), Suehiro Tetsucho, Vol. 2 "Takeda received a light five-year sentence in a trial without a seat." ② = kesseki hanketsu (judgment in absentia) ③ To make a decision about a person without the person being present, or to criticize someone who is not present. *Broadcast Stories (1946), Wada Shinkata, Vol. 3 "When I came to work during the New Year holidays, he was furious and fuming, saying, 'It's outrageous to have a trial in absentia.'"
