Platinum chloride is also called chloroplatinic acid or platinum hydrochloric acid. Platinum acids and their salts containing platinum in the oxidation states +II and +IV are known.

The chemical formula is H ₂ [PtCl ₄ ]. When an aqueous solution of _{H 2} [PtCl ₆ ] is reduced, a red solution is obtained. When a metal hydroxide is dissolved in this solution, the salt M ^I ₂ [PtCl ₄ ] (M ^I is a monovalent cation) is obtained. The salt is a red crystal. Alkaline salts are easily soluble in water. [PtCl ₄ ] ^2- has a square planar structure. Examples include potassium salt K ₂ [PtCl ₄ ] (specific gravity 3.382 (25°C)), cesium salt Cs ₂ [PtCl ₄ ], and barium salt Ba[PtCl ₄ ]･3H ₂ O (specific gravity 2.868).

　化学式H₂[PtCl₄]。H₂[PtCl₆]水溶液を還元すると赤色溶液として得られる。この溶液に金属の水酸化物を溶かすと塩M^I₂[PtCl₄](M^Iは1価陽イオン)が得られる。塩は赤色結晶。アルカリ塩などは水に易溶。[PtCl₄]^2－は平面正方形型構造をもつ。カリウム塩K₂[PtCl₄](比重3.382(25℃))，セシウム塩Cs₂[PtCl₄]，バリウム塩Ba[PtCl₄]･3H₂O(比重2.868)などがある。
