…He started working for a trading company in 1863, but after receiving recognition for his repeated letters to the editor, he became editor of the Darlington newspaper, the Northern Echo, in April 1871. In 1880, he was appointed deputy editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, a high-class London evening paper first published in 1865, and became editor in 1883. His belief was that newspapers could improve the morals of mankind, and he launched many campaigns that broke with conventional wisdom. Matthew Arnold labeled his works as "New Journalism," but he paved the way for the emergence of the 20th century popular press. …
