…the name given to India during the period when Britain ruled it directly. From 1877, some time after India was transferred to the British Crown, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom also held the title of Empress of India, and subsequent British kings were also called Emperors of India. This meant that an empire was formed within an empire.
