Groupware - Groupware

This is software that helps multiple users to work cooperatively using a computer. It is sometimes abbreviated as CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work). Traditionally, computers, especially personal computers, were thought of as something that supported individual work in some way, and human interfaces were developed for that purpose. Nowadays, computers are usually connected to networks, so to support healthy and efficient organizational activities, it is important to work together while exchanging information with each other on the network, and some kind of support system is required to make such collaboration smooth and effective. For example, a method is considered in which a virtual blackboard is set up on the network, where each person writes their opinions and summarizes the discussion, and software is being developed to facilitate this method. As a further development, virtual meeting spaces are being created where people in remote locations can recognize each other's faces and voices. However, there are problems inherent in human collaboration, such as the tendency to become irresponsible by relying on others, and in order to create a support system that overcomes these problems, a deep understanding of human social activities is essential.

It has functions such as email, electronic bulletin boards, schedulers, workflows, and libraries, and is used on corporate LANs for information sharing. Representative examples include Lotus Notes/Domino, Exchange Server, and Cybozu Office. Many of them used dedicated client software, but now groupware that uses a web browser has become mainstream.

複数のユーザーがコンピュータを利用し、互いに協調して仕事を進めることを援助するためのソフトウェアをいう。CSCW（Computer Supported Cooperative Work）と略称されることもある。従来コンピュータ、とくにパーソナルコンピュータ（パソコン）は個人の仕事を何らかの形で支援するものとして考えられ、そのためのヒューマン・インターフェースが開発された。現在ではコンピュータがネットワークに接続されることが常態になったため、健全で効率的な組織活動を支援するものとして、ネットワーク上で互いに情報交換をしながら共同作業をすることが重視され、またその共同作業を潤滑に、効果的に行えるような何らかの支援システムが要望されている。たとえば、ネットワーク上に仮想の黒板を設け、そこにめいめいが意見を書き込み、議論をまとめ上げるなどの方式が考えられ、その方式を円滑に進めるためのソフトウェアがつくられている。さらに発展したものとして、遠隔地にいる互いの顔や声が認識できるような仮想会議空間などもつくられている。しかし、人間の共同作業が本質的に内包している問題、たとえば他人に頼って無責任になりやすいなどの問題があり、それらを克服するような支援システムをつくるためには、人間の社会活動に対する深い理解が必須(ひっす)であろう。

　電子メール、電子掲示板、スケジューラ、ワークフロー、ライブラリなどの機能を持ち、情報共有のため企業内LANで利用される。代表的なものに、ロータスノーツ・ドミノLotus Notes/Domino、エクスチェンジ・サーバExchange Server、サイボウズ Officeなどがある。専用のクライアントソフトを使うものが多かったが、現在はWebブラウザを利用するグループウェアが主流となっている。
