…In principle, the annual tax for rice fields was paid in rice, but in the Muromachi period, many of them changed to payment in cash. In manors that were descended from early manors, the annual tax amount (todai) in terms of tanbetsu (per tan) was determined early on according to the yield. For example, in Ichii Manor, which was owned by Todaiji Temple in Yamato Province, the amount was set at five levels: 2 todai, 3 todai, 4 todai, 5 todai, and 6 todai, according to the land inspection book from 1137 (Hōen 3). Manors that were donated land were often influenced by the public land and official property rate law (Kanmotsuritsubō) that existed before the donation, such as the uniform 3 todai for Kasuga Manor, which was owned by Todaiji Temple in Yamato Province, and Ikeda Manor, which was owned by Ichijōin Temple in Kofukuji Temple in the same province, and the 6 to 4 sho 8 godai seen in part of Tara Manor, which was owned by Todaiji Temple in Wakasa Province. …
