Sautrāntika (English spelling)

Sautrāntika (English spelling)
Also called the Sutra school. A sect of Indian Buddhism. It is included in the Nyāmaṇicāda school of Buddhism. It is said to have been established separately from the Sarvastivada school around the middle of the 1st century. Its pioneers are thought to have been Kumāralāta (transliterated as Kumarāda, translated as Tōjū), known as the Master of Allegory, and Śrīlāta (Murīrāta), and it seems to have been a branch of the Gandharan lineage. Its distinctive feature is that it placed special importance on the sutras preached by Shakyamuni, which contrasts with the Sarvastivada school, which placed importance on treatises, which are research books on the sutras. Its ideological distinctiveness is that it understands all existence to be temporary, that past actions (karma) have the potential (seed) to bring about results, and that these constitute a special base called the "ichimiun," which will continue to exist from the present to the future and become the subject of reincarnation. This school produced Harivarman (→Karivatma), who wrote the Treatise on the Realization of True Buddhism (around the 3rd to 4th century).
