A former town in Higashimuro County in the southeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture. Occupying the mountainous region of the Kumano River basin, the town is primarily involved in forestry, producing a lot of timber and konnyaku (a type of jelly). It is home to the Totsu River basin and Doro Gorge. The Kitayama River basin is part of Yoshino-Kumano National Park. Incorporated into Shingu City in October 2005. Area: 175.47 km2 .
