Gujo Uprising

Japanese:
Gujo Uprising
An uprising occurred in Mino Province during the Edo Period. The uprising in the Enpo era (1673-1681) was against the increase in the annual tax collection by the domain, and when peasants heard that a chief retainer who did not approve of this policy was going to be assassinated, they began to protect his house. In 1683, the domain lord Endo returned to Japan and both factions were punished. The uprising in the Horeki era (1751-1764) was also against the kemidori (inspection and investigation) system, which was implemented as a measure to increase the annual tax collection, and in 1754 the rebels presented 16 articles calling for the abolition of various taxes. The domain initially accepted the uprising, but then had the village headmen agree to the kemidori system through the shogunate. The peasants again rebelled, and filed a palanquin petition against the senior councilor Sakai Tadayori. During this time, there was a split between the standing peasants and the sleeping peasants (those who had dropped out, etc.), and between the Sugimoto faction and the Kamimura faction. Finally, in 1758, the shogunate issued a ruling that confiscated the domain lord Kanamori Yorikane's land, and took measures such as removing the duties of the senior councilors, young councilors, inspectors, and financial magistrates, and 13 members of the rebellion were executed.
