Chain sickle - Kusarigama

Japanese:
Chain sickle - Kusarigama

Sickles were originally farm tools, but appear in such texts as "Genpei Seisuiki" and "Gikeiki" as weapons called nagigama (long-legged sickles). Documents from the Sengoku period also show sickles being carried on military battlefields, and sickle-jutsu still exists as an ancient Ryukyu martial art. A kusarigama is a sickle weapon with a weighted chain attached, and the sickle is used to attack by swinging the chain and striking the weight against the opponent's body, or wrapping it around the opponent's weapon, hand, or neck, and then knocking the weapon off. The sickle blade is 9 to 30 centimeters long, and the handle is about 20 to 50 centimeters long. It is said to have been invented during the Sengoku period, and was practiced as a martial art in the Edo period. Currently, according to research by the Japanese Kobudo Association, kusarigama-jutsu is passed down in schools such as Tendo-ryu, Jikishinkage-ryu, and Isshin-ryu.
