The capital of Quang Ngai Province in central Vietnam. It is located about 540 km north-northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, on the southern bank of the lowermost part of the Tra Cuoc River, which flows into the South China Sea. The city distributes agricultural products such as sugarcane, rice, and corn, as well as graphite and salt, which are produced in the surrounding area, and is home to industries such as sugar refining and silk refining. There are many ruins of the Champa Kingdom (2nd to 17th centuries), which was founded by the Cham people, in the vicinity. Near the northeastern coast is the village of My My, where villagers were indiscriminately massacred during the Vietnam War. National Highway 1, which connects the capital Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and the Thong Nhat Railway pass through the city. Population: about 50,000.
