[1] 〘Noun〙① In the early modern period, a continuous archery contest was held in the fourth and fifth lunar months at Sanjusangendo in Kyoto and Edo Fukagawa. Archers would test their skills by shooting thousands to tens of thousands of arrows across the entire length of the hall (approximately 120 meters) in one day and night from sunset to sunset the next day. The archer would boast of the number of arrows he had shot. Number of arrows. ⇔ Number of small arrows. 《Season: Summer》※Haiku poem, Saikaku Daikusu (1677), preface: "The number of great arrows in the world is the same as that of Hoshino Kanzaemon, whose name is known throughout the heavens."② In haiku, a person would recite verses consecutively for one day and one night, and would boast of the speed and number of verses he could shoot. Saikaku Oyasuzu. Five volumes. Written by Ihara Saikaku. Published in 1681. On May 7, 1681, Saikaku, who had broken his record for the “Oyasuzu”, composed this collection of 4,000 haiku solo poems at a one-day, one -night performance at the Minamibou of Ikudama Shrine in Osaka in order to restore his honor. [Glossary] The haiku of 4,000 verses based on the formula of (1)① in ( 1 )② began in May 1677, when Saikaku performed 1,600 verses at Ikudama Honkakuji Temple in Osaka and published them as “Oyasuzu”.

[1] 〘名〙① 近世、陰暦四、五月に、京都および江戸深川の三十三間堂で行なわれた通し矢の競技。弓の達人がその腕前を試みたもので、射手は、堂の長さ六六間(約一二〇メートル)を射通して、日暮れから翌日の日暮れまでの一昼夜に、数千本から一万数千本の矢を射続け、その矢数の多いのを誇りとした。矢数。⇔小矢数。《季・夏》※俳諧・西鶴大句数(1677)序「天下の大矢数は星野勘左衛門其名万天にかくれなし」② 俳諧で、一人が一日一夜に続けざまに句を吟じ、その速さと句数の多さとを誇るもの。矢数俳諧。※俳諧・西鶴大矢数(1681)第二五「駟(し)も舌に及ばぬ事ぞ大矢数〈守之〉 蛍飛んでは車四千句〈西鶴〉」[2] 江戸前期の俳諧集。西鶴大矢数。五巻。井原西鶴作。延宝九年(一六八一)刊。延宝八年五月七日、「大句数」の記録を破られた西鶴が名誉を回復するために大坂生玉社南房の一日一夜の興行で詠んだ四千句の俳諧独吟集。[語誌](一)①の式法にならった(一)②の矢数俳諧は、延宝五年(一六七七)五月、西鶴が大坂生玉本覚寺で一六〇〇句を興行し、「大句数」として刊行したのに始まる。
