Christian Democratic Social Union (CDU)

A conservative political party in Germany. The CDU was formed in various parts of Germany under the four-nation occupation from June 1945 after the war. Unlike the prewar Center Party (Catholic), it was influenced by the former but strengthened its character as a new party that combined old and new denominations. In 1947, as the Cold War intensified, the CDU in East and West Germany went their separate ways. Only in Bavaria was the CSU formed, which remains to this day, but in the former West Germany the CDU/CSU are in a coalition as sister parties known as Schwesterparteien.

ドイツの保守政党。CDUは戦後1945年6月以降，4国占領下ドイツ各地で結成され，戦前の中央党(カトリック系)と異なり，その影響を受けながらも新旧両宗派を統合する新党の性格を強めた。47年になって，冷戦が激化するに及んで，東･西ドイツ地区のCDUは別々の道を歩む。バイエルン州だけはCSUが結成され，今日にいたっているが，旧西ドイツのCDU/CSUは姉妹政党Schwesterparteienとして連合関係にある。
