Sclera

It is a white, opaque membrane that occupies most of the outer wall of the eyeball; the so-called white of the eye is seen through the transparent bulbar conjunctiva. It transitions anteriorly into the transparent cornea, and is pierced posteriorly by the optic nerve. Most of the tissue is made up of collagen fibers, and the matrix that fills the gaps contains chondroitin sulfate. It is about 1 mm thick, but is thinner at about 0.3 mm where the four rectus muscles attach. Formerly known as the sclera.

眼球の外壁の大部分を占める白色不透明な膜で、いわゆる白目は透明な球結膜を通してこの膜がみえることによる。前方は透明な角膜に移行し、後方は視神経によって貫かれている。組織の大部分は膠原線維(こうげんせんい)からなり、間を埋める基質はコンドロイチン硫酸を含む。厚さは約1ミリメートルであるが、4本の直筋が付着する部分では約0.3ミリメートルと薄い。以前は鞏膜という字が使われた。
