A famous general of the Tang Dynasty in China. He served four generations of emperors: Xuanzong, Suzong, Daizong, and Dezong. He was the son of a civil servant from Huazhou (Henan Province), but rose to prominence as a military officer. In 754, he became the Tiande military envoy in the north and the right warlord of the Shuofang military commander. In the following year, during the An Lushan Rebellion, he led the government forces in Hebei together with Hedong military commander Li Guangbi. After the fall of Chang'an, Suzong fled to Lingwu in the northwest. After his accession to the throne, he became deputy marshal under Crown Prince Guangping (later Daizong) and was in charge of overall command of the government forces. With Uighur reinforcements, he recaptured Chang'an and Luoyang in 756, and was praised for his contributions to the reconstruction of the nation. He was later forced to resign temporarily by the eunuch Yu Chao-en, but during the reign of Emperor Daizong, he was re-elected when the combined forces of the Tubo, Uighurs, Tuyuhun, and Tanguts invaded, and the rebellion of Bo Gu Huai-en, who had conspired with them, broke out. In 765, he turned the Uighurs against the Tubo and saved the country from crisis. After Emperor Dezong ascended to the throne in 779, he was given the title of Shangfu and the highest position of Grand Marshal, Secretary of the Secretariat, and was made King of Fenyang. His son Guo Ao married Emperor Daizong's daughter, Princess Shengping, and his grandson became Emperor Xianzong's wife, and their son became Emperor Muzong.
